Lab grown diamonds vs. Mined diamonds

Working for luxury brands we realized the existing problems within the industry and the different ways of working which were not aligned with us. For this reason, we created RÊVER in order to bring transparency and our vision of fashion within the jewelry industry.

Today, we have access to all the information and the best way to make a positive change is being informed. Transparency is a key point for us, so we want to bring light on the real differences between lab grown and mined diamonds.

We want to let you know why lab grown diamonds were our choice. We believe it is key for you to know about their origin and the production conditions, as well as their composition and impact on our society and planet.

What is their origin?

As already mentioned in previous occasions, the only real difference between a lab grown diamond and a mined diamond is its origin.
Mined diamonds come from deep in the ground, they were made there billions of years ago and to get them, companies extract them from the ground by mining the Earth with specialized equipment.
On the other hand, our lab grown diamond are created in laboratories replicating the natural growth process of diamonds in a controlled environment and using the High Pressure – High Temperature (HPHT) method.

Are there differences in their quality?

As you can see, lab grown diamonds have the same chemical composition, crystal structure, optical and physical properties as mined diamonds. There’s no difference!

How are diamonds selected and graded?

The two types of diamond are selected rough and with imperfections. Once selected, they are cut and polished for later grading and certification.

External institutes based on the standard 4C system certify both types: Cut, Carat, Colour and Clarity. The same institutes that certify mined diamonds also certify lab grown diamonds. In our case, diamonds of more than 0.50cts are certified through the International Gemological Institute (IGI) or the Diamond High Council of Antwerp (HRD) with their official certificate.

What is its cost?

Lab grown diamonds’s price is 30% less than mined diamonds. This is an advantage that we share and reflect in the final price of our jewelry, as we want to be 100% transparent and honest with you.

What is its social and environmental impact?

The mining industry is one of the most polluting in the world due to the large amount of soil it displaces, the acid it releases into groundwater, and the CO2 emitted into the atmosphere during the mining process.
Moreover, the majority of diamond mines are located in developing or underdeveloped countries where environmental regulations often do not exist and human rights are not regulated.

Our lab grown diamonds are not perfect, but they are a better option in terms of impact and traceability. They are created from green energy, that allow us to offer you a more sustainable and 100% conflict-free alternative compared to mined diamonds from the ground.
At RÊVER we work with lab grown diamonds that are not only chemically and optically the same as mined diamonds, but also help us to offer you a better value for money in all our pieces.
